Our Mission
To assist businesses in achieving healthy and productive workplaces by providing services to address addictions problems.
The AADAC Business & Industry Clinic offers residential treatment programs for employees who are experiencing serious problems and job performance issues because of alcohol or other drug use. The clinic opened at the Northern Addictions Centre in Grande Prairie in 1994.
AADAC started the clinic as a result of requests from the Alberta business community for a treatment program to address alcohol and other drug abuse in the workplace. The clinic was developed with help from professionals in employee assistance, occupational health and human resources. Our goals are to create healthier work environments, improve employee morale, minimize performance-related expenses, reduce training costs, decrease absenteeism and achieve lower accident rates.
The clinic accepts referrals from professionals who have assessed employees and determined that the clinic's programs are appropriate. Arrangements can be made by phone from 9:00 am-4:00 pm (MST), Monday to Friday.

Services
24-Hour Detoxification Services
Detoxification services are provided at the Northern Addictions Centre, and are included in the fee. A minimum two-day stay is mandatory for Business & Industry Clinic clients; if additional detoxification time is required, there is no extra cost regardless of the duration. Qualified medical personnel are on staff 24 hours a day, and a doctor is retained on contract.
Medical Management
The clinic requires supporting medical information for clients who have pre-existing medical conditions that need to be managed during their residential stay. This information helps health services staff to provide appropriate medical care. Please call the clinic for more information about medical management.
Residential Treatment
The clinic offers two residential treatment programs: a 30-day Alcohol and Drug Program with a five-month follow-up program, and a 49-day Cocaine Program with a seven-month follow-up program.
Both programs use proven therapeutic methods to give clients a foundation on which to base their recovery. Through education and counselling, a range of subjects and themes are addressed to help clients change irrational beliefs and unhealthy behaviour. The clinic's professional staff respect people and understand that a range of factors contributes to addiction. During treatment, counsellors help clients to identify specific areas essential to their ongoing health and recovery.
The clinic's treatment goal is abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. The 12-step recovery process treats alcoholism and chemical dependency as a disease. Clients learn the concept of a higher power while experiencing positive reinforcement from community self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These groups can provide vital support to lifelong recovery.
Family Program
This four-day program helps family members aged 14 and older to better understand addictions and to learn how alcohol and other drugs affect families as well as individuals. Participation allows family members to start their own healing process and become involved in their own recovery.
Follow-Up Programs
Research and clinical experience show that clients are at high risk of relapse immediately after residential treatment. The clinic's follow-up programs are designed to help clients stay clean and sober during this crucial transition period.
Counsellors maintain weekly telephone contact with clients after they have left the clinic. This contact helps clients to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned during treatment, and promotes successful links to community support groups. The follow-up program lasts five months for the Alcohol and Drug Program and seven months for the Cocaine Program.
Cocaine Program
Designed for people experiencing serious difficulties as a result of cocaine abuse or addiction, the 49-day Cocaine Program is the only 12-step cocaine treatment program available in Alberta. This extended, cocaine-specific program offers clients and referral agents a cost-effective alternative to out-of-province treatment centres. The Cocaine Program is an added component to the 30-day Alcohol and Drug Program, and includes a four-day pre-treatment preparation and a 16-day relapse prevention component.
Workplace Re-entry
The clinic provides referral agents with timely updates while clients are in the treatment programs and throughout the follow-up period. Clients attend information sessions prior to their graduation to help them identify and address potential re-entry issues. The clinic also works with referral agents to facilitate back-to-work arrangements.
Competitive Fees
The Alcohol and Drug Program is provided for $200 per day including lodging and meals. The total fee of $6,000 includes detoxification, 28 days of residential treatment, the four-day family program and the five-month follow-up program. The Cocaine Program also costs $200 per day (for a total of $9,000), and includes all of the above services plus 20 days of cocaine-specific treatment and seven months of follow-up counselling.
The clinic's programs and services compare favourably with those offered by private North American treatment centres costing thousands of dollars more.
Commitment to the Client
The clinic will accept clients who have relapsed within one year of completing either the Alcohol and Drug Program or the Cocaine Program for another full treatment program at no additional cost except a nominal room and board fee of $40 per day.
Clients seeking re-admission should call the clinic for more information.
Partners in Recovery
The Business & Industry Clinic’s theme, "Partners in Recovery," recognizes the involvement of many partners in the recovery process. Programs are structured to allow participation by clients, families, employers, referral agents, self-help groups and clinic staff—all of whom contribute to clients’ successful recovery and re-entry into the workplace.
The following 12-minute video is for referral agents who would like to know more about the clinic's treatment programs and staff, and how these programs fit into other treatment options offered by AADAC.
